SUMMARY:Ruth Gibson Demo & Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Demonstration & Workshop by Ruth Gibson\n \nThis demonstration & workshop is being organised by PACS Potters in association with the Southern Ceramics Group. \nWorking in porcelain\, Ruth Gibson combines a love of photography\, printmaking and ceramics\, to evoke a sense of place; in particular the Shropshire landscape and the Welsh coast and mountains. Inspired by many walks on the rugged Stiperstones\, or the Long Mynd\, imagery includes winter trees\, textures in nature\, birds in flight\, the rocks beneath the surface\, and the inclusion of sections on map\, rooting the work to the place it is inspired by. Ancient standing stones found scattered across the Shropshire and Welsh hills are echoed in the shapes of the ceramic pieces. \n“Utilising photography and ceramic printing techniques allows for photo realism to be combined with more abstract mark making to build up layers of images. Once screen-printed the clay can be stretched over molds\, the print can be distorted\, or small sections can be added or removed to create abstract patterns. The work is enhanced by the addition of glazes used in a painterly style. Through this ceramic artwork\, I am interested in conveying the peace and contemplative qualities which one can experience when immersed in the natural environment. I seek to enhance the qualities of porcelain and to reflect nature; the whiteness of a perfectly round pebble\, the seemingly scratched patterns found in stones and the smoothness of sea-worn shells inform the design and surface quality.” \nRuth has exhibited widely at international and national festivals\, taught at the University of Wolverhampton and has created brick and ceramic public art sculptures. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n At this demonstration / workshop Ruth will talk about her inspiration and work and show us her screen-printing process/techniques\, culminating in a chance to have a go ourselves! \nThe workshop element will be carried out in pairs\, each working with an example screen provided by Ruth. You will need to bring along some basic equipment for the workshop activity\, including slab making equipment (rolling pin\, guides\, board or material)\, squeegee (or large rubber kidney)\, and protection for the table and floor. There may also be other optional items which we will tell you about ahead of the demonstration date. \nFurther details of her work can be seen on her website:  Ruth Gibson Ceramics \n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday 21st September 2025\n10:00 am – 4:00 pm.  Arrival from 09:30 am onwards\, \n£30 for SCG members and PACS Potters members and £40 for guests.  This includes costs for materials for the workshop (clay\, black underglaze\, etc). \nHerne Farm Leisure Centre\, Petersfield\, GU31 4PJ \nBookings should be made via the Southern Ceramic Group website. Registration is required for all attendees. \nPlease use the form below to book your place(s) at the demonstration\, and to make your payment online securely by credit card or debit card. Also – please note that any cancellations requested more than 2 weeks ahead of the event will be refunded in full\, after that period no refunds will be issued however your place may be transferred to another named person. \nLunch will be our famous sharing buffet (please bring crockery and cutlery to save washing up!) – please bring a contribution with a description of the dish clearly labelled for those with allergies or diet sensitivities – but please STRICTLY NO nuts of any type please\, to avoid any nut allergy issues.   \nTea\, coffee\, biscuits will be provided. \nThere will be a raffle for an item of Ruth’s work during the demonstration/workshop. \nThere are a limited number of places due to the space and equipment required for the hands-on workshop activity\, so book soon! \nWe will also need some help on the day\, please contact Richard Hollingbery (richhbery@aol.com) if you are able to do this. \nFor any queries please contact us at richhbery@aol.com \n \n \n \n \n \n Booking Form\n \n \n \n \n \n Sorry\, but our limit for bookings has now been reached.  Please contact richhbery@aol.com.

SUMMARY:Demonstration by Tanya Gomez
DESCRIPTION:Tanya Gomez is a celebrated ceramist renown for her porcelain vessels in her signature lustrous colours. \nWith an MA in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art\, Tanya’s process is practice led. Developed from traditional methods and disciplines Tanya has honed her skills over the last 15 years and uses dynamic throwing\, cutting and assembling techniques to create large cylindrical shapes. Impactful both individually and as a group\, her vessels create expressive\, vivid landscapes and fluid\, architectural forms. \n From years working on sailing yachts\, travelling the world and coastal living\, Tanya has absorbed the abstract qualities of colour and shape\, particularly at sea and uses this to inspire her art forms and evocative glazes. \n“My vessels and installations can look like they are flowing” says Gomez \n“Clay is contradictory like that. You’re using this beautiful soft material but to manipulate it my movements are directive\, strong and controlled”. \nAs a master in her craft\, Tanya’s contemporary and original work is recognised by the Arts Council and Craft Council of England. She has gained much acclaim exhibiting internationally and continues to evolve her style\, experimenting and pushing her practice and the boundaries of her craft. \nPlease book by using this link Demo by Tanya Gomez | Southern Ceramic Group

SUMMARY:Mark Smith demo
DESCRIPTION:Demonstration by Mark Smith\nWe are incredibly fortunate to welcome the talentedceramic artist\, Mark Smith\, who will be joining us on Sunday\, the 13thof October. \nThe demonstration will take place from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Herne FarmLeisure Centre\, just like our previous events. It promises to be aninspiring and educational experience for all. \nMark Smith is known for his exceptional craftsmanship and uniquetechniques. He began his artistic journey with an Arts FoundationDiploma in 1990\, followed by an HND in Ceramic Design and Technologyin 1992. Mark’s early career saw him participating in the prestigiousCPA “Setting out” show at Marshall St\, London. By 1993\, he had becomea Licentiate member of the Designer Crafts Guild\, and in 1996\, heachieved the status of Professional member of the Craft PottersAssociation. \nMark’s work is based on a nostalgic representation of some of hisearliest memories of the sea. From the wildlife to the weather-worndecay of the architecture and the shipping industry\, old signage andweather-worn decay are key to bringing his sculptures to life. Heemphasizes the story-telling aspect of his work\, crossing betweenreality and fantasy. As a natural hoarder\, Mark’s recycle/upcycleelement stems from his fascination with old relics and unusualdesigns. He aims to reinvent objects and give them a new lease oflife\, highlighting the importance of recycling in today’senvironmental uncertainty. His clay elements mimic the aging process\,featuring ice cream colors\, rust\, and decay that complementweather-worn timber\, metals\, plastics\, beach finds\, and ceramics. \nMark’s work is known for bringing smiles to those who see it. As hesays\, “A smile a day keeps the doctor at bay!” \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday 13th October2024\n10:00 am – 4:00 pm \n£25 for SCG members and £30 for guests \nHerne Farm Leisure Centre\, Petersfield\, GU31 4PJ \nBookings should be made via the Southern Ceramic Group website. SUMMARY:Demonstration by Jemma Gowland
DESCRIPTION:Demonstration by Jemma Gowland\nWe are delighted to be welcoming the renowned artist Jemma Gowland to host an hands -on demonstration/mini workshop.  Jemma sculptures are prized by collectors both nationally and internationally and she has recently had an amazing summer exhibition at the RSA. \nFor participants the aim of the day is sculpting a small figure using an armature. \nAttendees will learn about basic body proportions and how these change with age and how to make an armature using drinking straws to help with proportions. \nWith Jemma’s expert guidance she will give hints and tips on changing stance to create a story\, a theme that is evident in her own amazing sculptures providing narrative and context to her figurative work. \nSCG will provide clay but participants should bring basic pottery tools\, and if possible a thick piece of polystyrene or rigid foam – roughly A4 size\, or 20x20cm ish\, about 4cm thick\, can be more.  Also participants should bring a shoebox or similar sized box  to transport the sculpture safely home. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday 28th October 2023\n10:00 am  for 10:30 start – 3:45 pm \n£30 for SCG members & PACS Potters members \n£40 for non members/guests \nThe Leisure CentreCrundlesHerne FarmPetersfieldGU31 4PJ \nBookings should be made via the Southern Ceramic Group website. \nWe are delighted to be welcoming Jemma Gowland as our next in-person demonstrator. \nGemma is highly regarded in the ceramic and art world for her thought-provoking sculptures that explore how children are constrained from birth to conform to an appearance and code of behaviour\, to present a perfect face\, and maintain the expectations of others. The disrupted surfaces\, clothed in cracked porcelain or bone china\, describe the vulnerability beneath. \nHowever\, crucially\, the work can also describe strength\, attitude\, sisterhood and resistance\, the mask as disguise to fit into the world. \nTickets are £30 for members of the Southern Ceramic Group & for PACS Potters members. Guests and non members are £40 per ticket. Guests are most welcome so please do share this information with friends\, family and other pottery enthusiasts! \nParticipants should bring a contribution to a buffet style meal – clearly labelled with meal type (vegetarian\, vegan\, dairy\, non gluten etc).  Strictly No nuts/nut oils please. \nTea\, coffee\, biscuits will be available with fruit juice or a glass of wine for lunch. \nThere will also be a raffle for one of Jemma’s beautiful pieces. SUMMARY:Demonstration by Adrian Bates - Saturday 4th March 2023
DESCRIPTION:Demonstration by Adrian Bates\n \n \n \n \n \n \nSaturday 4th March 2023\n10am for a 10:30 start – 4pm\nHerne Farm Leisure Centre\, Herne Farm\, Petersfield\, GU314 PJ \nWe are delighted to be welcoming Adrian Bates as our next in-person demonstrator. \nThis event is being run in collaboration with PACS (Petersfield) Potters. \nAdrian has been a full-time maker for over a decade now and has developed many  techniques\, particularly perhaps in slab building\, to suit the forms he makes which will hopefully be of interest to other makers. \nAs a teacher of ceramics he encourages students to develop a broad skillset in all the major methods as these tell the maker a lot about how clay responds to different treatments and changes it’s behaviour at different stages of stiffening\, drying and firing. \nHis pieces are engaging\, thought provoking and simply stunning! \nFee is £25 for members of the Southern Ceramic Group and PACS potters. Guests are  £30 per ticket. Guests are most welcome so please do share this information with friends\, family and other pottery enthusiasts! \nThere will be an extended lunch to incorporate the AGM meeting of the SCG. \nLunch is buffet style so please bring a contribution of food to this – do please let me know (email at the end of this) what you will be bringing so we don’t end up with too much of one type! \nFor more information on Adrian and his wonderful work please visit his website at \nhttps://www.adrianbatesceramics.com \nPlease use the form below to book your place(s) at the demonstration\, and to make your payment online securely by credit card or debit card. SUMMARY:Single-firing\, Mishima and Sgraffito: Talk and Demo by Julie Ayton
DESCRIPTION:From her Salisbury studio\, Julie Ayton makes pots in porcelain and stoneware alongside her workshop teaching. \nRaw glazing has interested her since college days and her distinctive stoneware bird baths and smaller monochrome porcelain pieces are decorated and finished raw\, then fired just once. \nJulie enjoys working directly onto the unfired surface with glaze\, allowing her to avoid the interruption of biscuit firing. With an eye to creative flow\, carbon emissions and fuel costs\, she is keen to encourage others to take the plunge. \nSlip decorating techniques like inlay (mishima)\, paper transfer and sgraffito work well with raw glazes. During this talk and demo Julie will share examples\, recipes\, tips and some fun approaches to experimenting with raw glaze for the greatest chance of successful single firing. \nJulie Ayton (FRSA\, https://www.instagram.com/julie_ayton/ www.julieayton.com) \nVasu has sent the link out to registrants\, but is happy to send to other SCG members on request. The link will be available for a month.

SUMMARY:Bishops Kitchen Exhibition 2022 at Chichester Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Ceramic Group consists of over 170 enthusiastic ceramicists who live and work in the south of England and share a passion for creating in clay. The members are as diverse as the objects they create. Some have spent a lifetime perfecting their craft while others have come to it only recently\, after careers ranging from engineering to medicine to dance and teaching. What they all share is intense creativity. During a year in which they have all been struggling to show their work\, they have been locked in their studios busy creating and experimenting. \nNow there is an opportunity to see – and buy –  the fruits of these labours as they bring their work to the group’s annual exhibition in the beautiful Old Kitchen in the Bishop’s Palace in Chichester: a real\, live and in-person exhibition-cum-sale! The work to be exhibited includes both traditional and experimental functional ware as well as sculptural and decorative pieces. You will find brightly coloured tableware\, subtle ash glazed vases\, stoneware bottles\, carved sculptures\, painted tiles and framed ceramic art for hanging on walls. The most striking thing about this exhibition is the enormous range of artefacts created from the same materials. \nThe exhibition will feature over 600 works from 60 potters who live and work locally. Don’t miss your opportunity to purchase work from some  exceptional local artists. \n

SUMMARY:SCG AGM and January Demonstration by Mike Flynn
DESCRIPTION:Mike was born in Germany\, and spent some of his early childhood on a farm in Ireland. He initially studied fine art (painting) but turned to ceramics at Cardiff College of Art (1975-78) under Alan Barrett-Danes. His highly distinctive figurative ceramics draw inspiration from such diverse sources as Meissen figurines\, expressionist art and the gestural ceramics of Peter Voulkos. \n \nUsing a variety of ceramic techniques and materials including raku\, terracotta and porcelain\, his sculptures explore the dangerous nature of male/female relationships with suggestions of lust\, violence\, joy and ecstasy. \n \nMichael Flynn is a storyteller. One of those born hoarders of tales from the collective memories of all the cultures in time and space\, and the characters that inhabit them. He has rubbed shoulders with real artists and fictional characters through voracious reading; these have been absorbed\, mixed and combined through his imagination. \n \nHe is a compulsive communicator\, inventor\, and embroiderer of tales that take us out of the ordinary by reshaping and transforming them into fable. Ceramics is the language in which he constructs and articulates his stories. \n \nMike has a studio in Cardiff\, and spends parts of the year in Poland\, Germany or Austria\, where he works in artist residencies\, teaching and running workshops.  His work is exhibited (and sold) world wide.  He is author of “Ceramic Figures: A Directory of Artists”\, A & C Black\, 2002. He received a Creative Wales Award in 2008. \nFor more images: www.flickr.com/photos/mchaelflynnceramics \nThe SCG AGM will take place during the lunch break (agenda to follow) \nCatering arrangements: Coffee\, tea and biscuits will be available on the day.  Please bring a contribution to an American Supper style lunch\, as well as your own crockery and\ncutlery \nTo register\, please fill in the registration form by clicking on the image below:-
