SUMMARY:Single-firing\, Mishima and Sgraffito: Talk and Demo by Julie Ayton
DESCRIPTION:From her Salisbury studio\, Julie Ayton makes pots in porcelain and stoneware alongside her workshop teaching. \nRaw glazing has interested her since college days and her distinctive stoneware bird baths and smaller monochrome porcelain pieces are decorated and finished raw\, then fired just once. \nJulie enjoys working directly onto the unfired surface with glaze\, allowing her to avoid the interruption of biscuit firing. With an eye to creative flow\, carbon emissions and fuel costs\, she is keen to encourage others to take the plunge. \nSlip decorating techniques like inlay (mishima)\, paper transfer and sgraffito work well with raw glazes. During this talk and demo Julie will share examples\, recipes\, tips and some fun approaches to experimenting with raw glaze for the greatest chance of successful single firing. \nJulie Ayton (FRSA\, https://www.instagram.com/julie_ayton/ www.julieayton.com) \nVasu has sent the link out to registrants\, but is happy to send to other SCG members on request. The link will be available for a month.

SUMMARY:Gareth Mason presentation and demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Saturday October 1st 2022 \n2:00pm \nPorchester Community Centre \n \nWe are delighted to advise that our next in-person presentation and demonstration in the autumn will be the amazing Gareth Mason. \nOriginally planned to happen before the pandemic\, this event has had to be postponed several times\, partly due to Covid but also due to some unfortunate events including Gareth breaking a bone in his left hand! \nHe is now fit and well and eager to meet you all and demonstrate his relaxed yet exciting approach to working with clay. \nGareth specialises in dramatic pots and exhibits in solo and group exhibitions internationally. He is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and Brother of the Art Workers Guild\, London. He lives and works in Hampshire and residences have included China and USA. \nStarting at 230pm we are aiming to have an American buffet style tea around 4:30/5pm and would love for you to please bring a contribution to the meal so that we can all share some tasty food! Please email me in the first instance (as below) to book your place and your proposed food contribution so that we don’t end up with too many of one thing! I’ll then confirm and pass on payment details. \nThis event is promising to be a wonderful demonstration\, learning opportunity and also ‘proper’ social get together as we being the meal element back to these events. Always a highlight! \nTickets will be £22.50 for members\, or £25 for guests. Book and pay via this link Gareth Mason demonstration\n \n  \nIn the meantime\, and to whet your (clay) appetite\, work can be found to view on Instagram (@mudfondler)\, at Jason Jacques Gallery (www.jasonjacques.com/exhibitions or www.jasonjacques.com/artists/garethmason) or www.garethmason.net. There are also a lot of images of Gareth’s work on the net.” \nHe was also featured in a blog about his work that you may wish to read –  \nhttps://jtwceramics.com/2022/08/29/gareth-mason-artist-profile/ \nI do hope you can join us!

SUMMARY:Bishops Kitchen Exhibition 2022 at Chichester Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Ceramic Group consists of over 170 enthusiastic ceramicists who live and work in the south of England and share a passion for creating in clay. The members are as diverse as the objects they create. Some have spent a lifetime perfecting their craft while others have come to it only recently\, after careers ranging from engineering to medicine to dance and teaching. What they all share is intense creativity. During a year in which they have all been struggling to show their work\, they have been locked in their studios busy creating and experimenting. \nNow there is an opportunity to see – and buy –  the fruits of these labours as they bring their work to the group’s annual exhibition in the beautiful Old Kitchen in the Bishop’s Palace in Chichester: a real\, live and in-person exhibition-cum-sale! The work to be exhibited includes both traditional and experimental functional ware as well as sculptural and decorative pieces. You will find brightly coloured tableware\, subtle ash glazed vases\, stoneware bottles\, carved sculptures\, painted tiles and framed ceramic art for hanging on walls. The most striking thing about this exhibition is the enormous range of artefacts created from the same materials. \nThe exhibition will feature over 600 works from 60 potters who live and work locally. Don’t miss your opportunity to purchase work from some  exceptional local artists. \n

SUMMARY:SCG AGM and January Demonstration by Mike Flynn
DESCRIPTION:Mike was born in Germany\, and spent some of his early childhood on a farm in Ireland. He initially studied fine art (painting) but turned to ceramics at Cardiff College of Art (1975-78) under Alan Barrett-Danes. His highly distinctive figurative ceramics draw inspiration from such diverse sources as Meissen figurines\, expressionist art and the gestural ceramics of Peter Voulkos. \n \nUsing a variety of ceramic techniques and materials including raku\, terracotta and porcelain\, his sculptures explore the dangerous nature of male/female relationships with suggestions of lust\, violence\, joy and ecstasy. \n \nMichael Flynn is a storyteller. One of those born hoarders of tales from the collective memories of all the cultures in time and space\, and the characters that inhabit them. He has rubbed shoulders with real artists and fictional characters through voracious reading; these have been absorbed\, mixed and combined through his imagination. \n \nHe is a compulsive communicator\, inventor\, and embroiderer of tales that take us out of the ordinary by reshaping and transforming them into fable. Ceramics is the language in which he constructs and articulates his stories. \n \nMike has a studio in Cardiff\, and spends parts of the year in Poland\, Germany or Austria\, where he works in artist residencies\, teaching and running workshops.  His work is exhibited (and sold) world wide.  He is author of “Ceramic Figures: A Directory of Artists”\, A & C Black\, 2002. He received a Creative Wales Award in 2008. \nFor more images: www.flickr.com/photos/mchaelflynnceramics \nThe SCG AGM will take place during the lunch break (agenda to follow) \nCatering arrangements: Coffee\, tea and biscuits will be available on the day.  Please bring a contribution to an American Supper style lunch\, as well as your own crockery and\ncutlery \nTo register\, please fill in the registration form by clicking on the image below:-

SUMMARY:Demonstration by Roger Cockram
DESCRIPTION:Our next demonstration will be by Roger Cockram at the Denmead Community Centre\, School Lane\, Denmead\, Waterlooville PO7 6LU on 20 October 2019. 10.00 to 3.30. \n \nArtist Statement \n“Although my work is mostly thrown on the wheel\, it is distinctive in the way it seeks to explore fundamental features of nature. My particular interest lies in my observations of the sea and coastline near my home in Devon – and many of the pieces act as ‘caught moments’ of movement\, colour and rhythm. \nThe colours and sense of depth in the surfaces\, along with the rhythms in the altered forms hopefully suggest timeless qualities observable in the natural world. Following my observations from these surroundings\, ideas are ‘resolved’\, to catch their essence and to make the piece accessible as a piece of ceramic. \nMy work is mostly thrown in high temperature fine porcelain – and the work results in various vessel forms\, sometimes quite large. Often the work on the wheel is altered in some way – be it by partially folding to make a bowl oval – or inserting spirals into the piece whilst wet to enhance a feeling of rhythm. Recent work is sometimes made using slab clay and handbuilding. \nI often use several layers of brushed dry and running glazes\, which interact during the long firing process to give a strong sense of fluidity\, movement and depth. All my work is once-fired to Cone 11 in a reduction kiln.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAttendance Fee \nRegistration is £20 for members\, £25 for guests. \nCatering arrangements \nCoffee\, tea and biscuits will be available on the day. Please bring a contribution to an American Supper style lunch\, as well as your own crockery and cutlery. \nBooking Form – Please click on image below

SUMMARY:Talk and Demonstration by Katie Smith
DESCRIPTION:Our next demonstration will be by Katie Smith\, who writes: \nThe continually changing landscape fascinates me and has become the main influence behind my drawings and sculptural pieces. I am obsessed with how human touch has always had a huge impact on the world around us. Now\, in urban life\, we are surrounded by a new landscape where streetlights and signposts\, chimneys and aerials have replaced the trees and rock forms of a more natural setting. \nI use ceramic structures to create my own landscape of forms. \nShying away from heavy glazing use oxides and stains to colour my work. I love the raw\, urban look that these give to my pieces. They highlight the textural and linear nature of the relief and celebrate the earthy properties of the material. \n \n \nVisit her web site www.katiesmithceramics.com \nCatering arrangements \nCoffee\, tea and biscuits will be available on the day.  Please bring a contribution to an American Supper style lunch\, as well as your own crockery and cutlery. \nRegistration Document (Microsoft Word Format) \nRegistration Document (PDF Format)

SUMMARY:Richard Wilson Demonstration and SCG AGM
DESCRIPTION:The next SCG demonstration with Richard Wilson will incorporate our AGM. To encourage attendance\, the registration fee for SCG members is waived. After studying for two years at Great Yarmouth College of Art\, he worked from 1974 to 1980 at Le Dieu Pottery in Norwich before spending 3 years in Australia and New Zealand\, and a further five in Germany\, working with many potters using different techniques\, in particular woodfired saltglazes. \nWhilst in Germany\, Richard spent some time with potters whose work drew from Eastern European designs\, and has himself been especially inspired by Hungarian and Romanian slipware from the 1800s. He has also been strongly influenced by the Cardew tradition of English country pottery\, having spent some months working at Wenford Bridge in the 1980s\, learning about the strengths and subtleties of Cardew’s work. \nRecently his work has explored colour and abstract patterns in strong forms that capture the ebb and flow of the sea and the landscape of South West Dorset. \nHis studio is at unit 1\, George St\, West Bay\, Bridport DT6 4EL \nAs a member of several pottery associations including Professional Member of the Craft Potters Association and ex chairman of the West Country Potters Association\, he has been selected over the years for many cermamic fairs here in England and in Europe. \nRichard’s work is sold in many galleries in the UK from Scotland to Cornwall and also the Caribbean. \nTo view Richard’s work\, please visit his web site www.rwilson-ceramics.co.uk \n \nRegistration is Free for members\, £25 for their guest. \nThe SCG AGM will take place during the Lunch break (agenda to follow) Catering arrangements Coffee\, tea and biscuits will be available on the day. \nPlease bring a contribution to an American Supper style lunch\, as well as your own crockery \nRegistration Document\nName: \nAddress: \nContact phone no: \nEmail address: \nSCG membership no: \nName of guest: \nThis document can be completed and sent by email to: zyg@kruk.co.uk \nPayment for guests only (please indicate): BACS…… or Cheque……… \nBACS Account: Southern Ceramic Group Bank: Lloyds A/c no: 26954360 Sort code: 30 90 34 Reference: R Wilson YourName \nCheques should be made payable to Southern Ceramic Group and posted (with a printed copy of the completed registration form) to: \nZyg Kruk 30 Wittering Rd Hayling Is Hants PO11 9SP zyg@kruk.co.uk: 02392469104 07864995843

SUMMARY:AGM and Demonstration by Kay Aplin
DESCRIPTION:A quote from www.kayaplin.com \nFor 22 years Kay Aplin has been forging a successful career in architectural ceramics. During this time she has had many commissions around the UK and internationally\, producing a distinct range of public realm art works that have stood the tests of weather and time. Kay also creates large-scale ceramic installations for galleries and commissions for interiors and gardens. \nSince 2011\, with the creation of The Ceramic House\, Kay has been establishing herself as a curator of contemporary ceramics with annual international exhibitions. \n“Kay Aplin is rapidly establishing herself as one of the most energetic and active ceramic artists in the UK. She is becoming more and more known for her innovative Ceramic House\, and her current work is expanding into areas of curation and initiation of new ceramic events and exhibitions in the wider visual arts world. This is feeding into her own work which has always been dynamic\, totally original\, full of colour\, ambitious and delightfully idiosyncratic.” Sandy Brown \nKay will give illustrated talks of her work\, and then demonstrate tile making by press moulding and using slip. There may be an opportunity for SCG members to try their hand at these techniques. \nFor more examples of her work please visit \nwww.kayaplin.com\nwww.theceramichouse.co.uk\nwww.incameragallery.uk \nPlease note\nThe SCG AGM 2018 will take place during the lunch break at this event. As space is limited at this venue\, it may be necessary to restrict numbers attending the demonstration\, but this will not prevent SCG members attending the AGM only (but they may be requested to leave after the AGM). To encourage attendance at the AGM\, the registration fee to members is waived. Early registration is advised\, first come\, first served. \nThe registration fee is free for SCG members\, and £25 for their guests.  Please contact Zyg Kruk for bookings: e-mail:  zyg@kruk.co.uk: Tel: 02392469104 Mob: 07864995843 \nCatering arrangements \nCoffee\, tea and biscuits will be available on the day.  Please bring a contribution to an American Supper style lunch\, as well as your own crockery and cutlery.  The SCG AGM will take place during the Lunch break at this meeting.

SUMMARY:The International Ceramics Festival
DESCRIPTION:The ICF is Europe’s premier ceramics festival which is held at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on the campus of Aberystwyth University on the mid-Wales coast. Since it began in 1987\, the three-day festival has grown to become the UK’s leading ceramics event. It offers teachers\, students\, ceramic artists\, collectors\, working potters and amateurs and lovers of craft\, the chance to meet and study the work of distinguished\, internationally known potters and ceramicists from Wales\, the UK and around the world. \nThe Festival attracts over 1000 people who attend lectures\, watch practical demonstrations and visit our special exhibitions over a long weekend at the end of June or early July. Our international demonstrators show skills and techniques on our specially adapted stage and also have their own workspaces – enabling personal discussion about their work. The focus is both practical and inspirational – kilns are built\, pots are made and fired.
