Fiona Kelly

After three years of evening classes at Goldsmiths’ College in London, Fiona studied part-time there in the Ceramics Department during 1981-3, concentrating on throwing with Lisa Hammond.
Following moving to Bournemouth, the births of her four daughters, and working in the tourism and construction industries, she is now able to devote more time to potting.
Fiona likes to make functional pottery for everyday use in the home. Most work is thrown on an electric wheel and decorated using a variety of slips, oxides and underglaze colours before the first firing. She uses relief decoration, often in conjunction with paper resist designs to bring another level of interest to the work, and has introduced a sculptural element through more modelled handles and lids. Glazing is kept simple with either a dip in the bucket of her own recipe glaze, or using two glazes for one range of work. Finally the pots are fired to 1280 C in an electric kiln.
In 2013 Fiona took over the Creative Gallery in Wareham, Dorset, a wonderful destination and gateway to the Isle of Purbeck. In 2024 family commitments bought the closing of the Creative, but she was delighted to be asked to sell her work in Studio 16 in South Street, as she has sold her work in Wareham for nearly 30 years.
She also sells her work at Forest & Cove in Romsey, Fossil Blue in Wimborne, Ballard & Bay in Swanage, St Alban Street Gallery in Weymouth, and Everycloud Gallery in Dorchester, with Southern Ceramic Group, East Dorset Potters and Little Craft Shack, as well as attending a variety of events through the season.
