“Liberty and Co”

Price £95

10.5cm base diameter, 8.cm height

Weight: x590gms

This is a preview piece destined for a solo exhibition planned for October at The Farnham Pottery. The Farnham Pottery is a special place for me. It is where my interest in making pottery really began to develop, and where I made many like minded friends. After studying at UCA Farnham, I returned to the fold as a tutor, and for two years rented an artist space within the building before building studio space at my home in Hampshire.

The vessel ‘Liberty & Co’ is one of a small body of work, representing ink pots, inspired by the handwriting I found in the Pottery’s ledger books of the 1800 & 1900’s I am working on a body of work in preparation for an exhibition at the pottery later in October. ‘Liberty & Co’ is a taste of the work to come, it is for sale, but not available until early November after the exhibition is completed. Please contact me to reserve the piece if you wish to purchase it. Anyone interested in the final arrangements for the exhibition, please contact me direct and I can update them when I know more.

“Garden Cane Finials, set of 3 – Original Style”

Price £50

7 cm diameter x 17 cm height (each approx)

Weight: 115gms x 3

Inspired by the garden, these cane toppers, finials, mini sculptures, whatever you want to call them are all fired to stoneware temperatures, so they are weather resistant. They are often likened to witches hats, but in reality, they were inspired by the early stages of Lupin flowers, as they are gradually opening and finding their curves.

I wheel throw the original masters, then make plaster moulds from these. After slip casting, I gently manipulate the form, giving each piece their own feel.

Glazed with my own copper based glaze, the colour ranges from a copper verdigris to natural slate, the finish tends towards satin/matt.

These pieces work best in small groups of at least three.

Images shown are for guidance only, each piece is slightly different, so the markings may vary.

There are two styles, Original and Tall.

Non porous,  weather resistant.

My preferred methods of making are throwing and slip casting. By combining the two skills, I can create a form that I can use to create a ‘master’. Once refined and sometimes altered a little, I make a plaster mould, from which I can then reproduce similar pieces to form a group or family. Each piece will have its own personality, but will work well in a group. The garden finials, often likened to witches hats, are in fact originally inspired by the early stages of a Lupin flower opening. I mix my own glazes, and for the finials, I use a copper based glaze which when fired err towards pewter grey and verdigris depending on the temperature and coverage.

At the present time I’m also working towards a solo exhibition at The Farnham Pottery in October. Inspired by the beautiful handwriting in the Ledger Books of the 1800’s, my work is all thrown porcelain with decals of script.
