Tony Thompson
I have always been, in one way or another, inclined to the ‘arts’, be it working in pencil, pen-and-ink, watercolour, or oils, but the needs of family life always seemed to get in the way. I had attended night school “Pottery” classes some 30 years ago and more recently taken a NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Sculpture at the South Downs College (the College cancelled the Level 2 the following year! )
Having retired, after spending my working life as a qualified Mechanical Engineer, with a high involvement in Control Software, I decided that I now had the time to get busy again. One thing I had learned from the little experience I had of ceramics, was that creating an object in clay and covering it in glaze, for somebody else to fire, was only part of the fun. So, I built a small gas fired kiln, and started exploring slip casting, hand building, glazes and raku, and then realised how little I knew.
But now I’m learning all the time ! And it’s fun.
