Demonstration by Mark Smith

We are incredibly fortunate to welcome the talented
ceramic artist, Mark Smith, who will be joining us on Sunday, the 13th
of October.

The demonstration will take place from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Herne Farm
Leisure Centre, just like our previous events. It promises to be an
inspiring and educational experience for all.

Mark Smith is known for his exceptional craftsmanship and unique
techniques. He began his artistic journey with an Arts Foundation
Diploma in 1990, followed by an HND in Ceramic Design and Technology
in 1992. Mark’s early career saw him participating in the prestigious
CPA “Setting out” show at Marshall St, London. By 1993, he had become
a Licentiate member of the Designer Crafts Guild, and in 1996, he
achieved the status of Professional member of the Craft Potters
Association.

Mark’s work is based on a nostalgic representation of some of his
earliest memories of the sea. From the wildlife to the weather-worn
decay of the architecture and the shipping industry, old signage and
weather-worn decay are key to bringing his sculptures to life. He
emphasizes the story-telling aspect of his work, crossing between
reality and fantasy. As a natural hoarder, Mark’s recycle/upcycle
element stems from his fascination with old relics and unusual
designs. He aims to reinvent objects and give them a new lease of
life, highlighting the importance of recycling in today’s
environmental uncertainty. His clay elements mimic the aging process,
featuring ice cream colors, rust, and decay that complement
weather-worn timber, metals, plastics, beach finds, and ceramics.

Mark’s work is known for bringing smiles to those who see it. As he
says, “A smile a day keeps the doctor at bay!”
