Single-firing, Mishima and Sgraffito: Talk and Demo by Julie Ayton

8 November 2022 at 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm

From her Salisbury studio, Julie Ayton makes pots in porcelain and stoneware alongside her workshop teaching.

Raw glazing has interested her since college days and her distinctive stoneware bird baths and smaller monochrome porcelain pieces are decorated and finished raw, then fired just once.

Julie enjoys working directly onto the unfired surface with glaze, allowing her to avoid the interruption of biscuit firing. With an eye to creative flow, carbon emissions and fuel costs, she is keen to encourage others to take the plunge.

Slip decorating techniques like inlay (mishima), paper transfer and sgraffito work well with raw glazes. During this talk and demo Julie will share examples, recipes, tips and some fun approaches to experimenting with raw glaze for the greatest chance of successful single firing.
