Pippa Honess

I have always loved ceramics but my first experience of making was in the hills of Tinos in Greece with an eccentric German potter who attempted to teach me to throw whilst sitting sideways on a kick wheel. However, I was hooked and after many years of evening classes, adult education, City and Guilds and finally a Diploma in Ceramics at the City Lit in London, I set up my own studio at home.

My work is more sculptural than functional and is hand built and burnished using a white stoneware clay. I have always been drawn to embrace the unknown, both in life and in ceramics and by creating work that is smoke-fired, I believe it is more tactile and warmer to the touch that pots that have been glazed and my shapes are more spontaneous than designed.

After its initial firing, the work is smoke-fired in the garden with a variety of materials, wood shavings, pine needles, seaweed and oxides, each element adding to the unique markings and colours achieved on the work. Finally it is polished with beeswax which enhances the marks and scars made by the fire.

In the end, the fire has the final say in the outcome of the work. It is essential to work with the elements, learn from each firing and accept the unpredictability that this form of making brings. Each piece will be unique.
