My studio is based in the heart of Hampshire near Winchester. From my wheel I look out over farmland. The earth, fields and hedgerows provide inspiration with different textures and colours depending on the season.
Most of my work is thrown on the wheel and is functional. I use white and grey stoneware clays and black and white porcelain and fire at around 1200 degrees centigrade in oxidation. I make many of my glazes focussing on a palette of blue and green. Despite a lack of interest in chemistry at school many years ago, I now find experimenting with different chemical materials fascinating and enjoy looking for that perfect durable flowing glaze.
I have recently challenged myself to try something new. Using only black stoneware clay and a simple white decoration I have made a series of pots some of which are included in the exhibition at the Great Kitchen.
I have used different methods including throwing, hand building and altered forms. I used a white slip as a decoration base and experimented with texture using my fingers, a stiff brush and some twigs. I also experimented with a lichen crawl glaze recipe and added sodium silicate to a white slip. Some pots I burnished others I used turning tools to create a rough surface. I made marks in the slip by scoring and scouring.
The possibilities with clay are endless and the opportunity to be creative is a wonderful thing.
