Teresa Munn

I write with clay, exploring relationships with landscapes past and present.

My work falls into two categories, linked by texture and memory.

Firstly, writing with slip in a way that the piece could be fired and remain as one piece, so text becomes the form, either flat and wall mounted or as vessels carrying our stories.   I love the shapes and shadows cast by 3-dimensional script.  The words have a physicality and express memories and feelings evoked by walking in landscape.

Secondly, by making handheld objects with texture where I enjoy the tactile nature of clay and make each piece with one handful of clay.  Ceramic ‘pebbles’ have textured surfaces created with erosion techniques for raised script and carved markings.  The pinch pots have thinned and folded edges to reflect the fragility of our coastlines, along with iron oxide slips and sgrafitto.

Walking along a beach, picking up a pebble to hold in the hand, we remember the people and conversations from across the years.  Poetry has the ability, within a few short lines, to transport us to another time and place.

I studied an MA in Ceramics at UCA Farnham and work from my Studio in North Hampshire.  My practice is developing through residencies and networking / collaborations across disciplines.
