Catherine Claasen

I am a ceramicist now working as a freelance Art Educator after a career in teaching. I often work with children who are experiencing clay for the first time – generating curiosity, conversation and confidence, playing with clay is endlessly fascinating.

Using a variety of clays and ceramic techniques, I enjoy experimenting with adapted forms, and shapes. I mix elements of handbuilding and throwing and I am always striving to improve my technique and design. I work from my small home studio.

I enjoy spending time with all the processes involved – from raw clay to finished pot – making objects that are often both functional and decorative. I also enjoy alternative firing techniques like raku and smoke-firing.

I am inspired by patterns, shapes, textures and patterns in the natural world and like to make interesting pots that are tactile, tell a story, pots that make you think.
