Claudi Barratt
Joining a pottery class soon after, she fell in love again….this time with clay. She has worked with this medium ever since, teaching children and adults too at various times. She also works part-time as the ceramics department technician at West Dean College outside of Chichester, where she has developed her skills and nurtured her creativity for over 20 years. To further her knowledge she also completed an AS level in 3 Dimensional Design at Havant College.
Over the years her work has continued to evolve. For the last 7 years or so, Claudi has been working mainly with coloured clay, staining a sample of the base clay, laminating and then stretching it, so as to form a unique and unrepeatable canvas. A scene is then created using stains, coloured clays, porcelain, sand, oxides and plant materials for impressing and finally some hand drawing to accentuate some particular details like beachhuts or birds. The clay surface is left unglazed, adding to the natural look of the design. Each piece of work is completely unique and unrepeatable…!!! Vessels are glazed inside to hold water if required.
“My inspiration comes from the natural world, the beautiful surroundings around Hayling Island. Seascapes, people, the beach, sailing boats, birds and the working properties of the clay itself.”
