Clay was very seductive from the beginning I loved the feel of working with such a basic material with the endless possibilities available. I work almost entirely by hand, building with pinch, coil and slab.

Raku is my chosen route. There’s a real excitement in firing pots outdoors and playing with fire. Its unpredictability is always challenging, and no two firings behave quite the same. Much of my work explores the interplay of texture and glaze, creating surfaces that deceive the eye, and I love experimenting with glazes, metals and firing temperatures to see how they turn out.

My path into clay began in Paddington in the early 1980s, studying under Alison Britton, and continued through many years potting at home in Surrey, where raku firings and the smell of kilns and sawdust became part of family life. In 2012 I graduated with a BA in Ceramics from Glasgow School of Art, which broadened my understanding of the material and my network of fellow potters, and confirmed the hand-built, fire-led direction my work has taken since.

I have exhibited regularly across Surrey and the south of England, including with the Southern Ceramics Group and Wey Ceramics. For me there will always be another piece to be made.
