Katrina Frere-Smith
Growing up in the northeast of Scotland, I’ve always been drawn to the colours and textures of nature; the muted blues of the craggy coast, smooth grey stones in dark peaty rivers, the sunlit green of native woodlands.
I work primarily with white stoneware – a material I enjoy for its strength and versatility. Its neutral surface acts as a blank canvas, allowing the glaze to shine. My practice centres on creating vessels – mostly wheel-thrown – that are designed to be used as well as looked at.
My current work is inspired by time spent living in rural Japan, with its 108 active volcanoes. The island where I lived is known for its 1000 year-old cedar trees. Their rich copper coloured wood and dark volcanic rock are combined in this collection.
